Kiosk Accessibility at Bite

One in four adults in the United States lives with a disability. For too long, self-service kiosks have failed them—buttons out of reach, screens impossible to read, audio features that simply don't work. We built Bite differently.

Accessibility isn't a feature we added after the fact. It's a design requirement baked into how we build everything. Our UI is developed in accordance with both the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and Apple's Human Interface Guidelines (HIG)—an industry gold standard for building interfaces that work for everyone. That means every new feature Bite ships is evaluated for accessibility from the start, not patched for it later.

The result is a kiosk experience that works for the guest who is blind, the guest in a wheelchair, the guest who needs a little more time, and the guest who simply prefers not to ask for help. That's who these features are for.

Our Accessibility Features

All of Bite's accessibility features are built into the platform and configurable per location through Bite Admin—no custom development required.

Reduced Height Mode

Bite's reduced height mode lowers the active menu area so that all touch targets fall within the 48" maximum reach height required by ADA guidelines — without requiring hardware replacement. The full ordering experience, including menus, modifiers, and checkout, is supported in this mode. Operators can enable and configure reduced height mode on a per-location basis through Bite Admin.

Pinch-to-Zoom

Guests can activate pinch-to-zoom directly from the kiosk interface via a dedicated button in the bottom navigation bar. Once enabled, an instructional modal guides the guest through using zoom to navigate the menu at their preferred scale. This feature is available and can be enabled through Bite Admin.

Audio Navigation (Storm)

Blind and visually impaired guests plug headphones into the industry standard, Storm D-Pad device and navigate the entire ordering flow—menu browsing, modifier selection, checkout—using directional buttons with spoken audio guidance. No sighted assistance required.

Operator Responsibility

While Bite provides software features and deployment guidance designed to support ADA compliance, ultimate responsibility for ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local accessibility laws and regulations—including ADA Title III requirements—rests with the operator. Requirements may vary by jurisdiction, and Bite encourages all customers to consult with qualified legal counsel to ensure their specific deployments meet the accessibility standards applicable in their area.
